The Philadelphia Flyers made history last night as they scored three goals in 24 seconds against the New Jersey Devils.
The team honored the late Bernie Parent as they sent the New Jersey Devils back to Newark.
The Devils started the game with a 1-0 lead. That didn’t last long. The Flyers then scored four unanswered goals to close out the first period of play.
Each team would score one more in the second period, but the Flyers entered the third period with a comfortable 5-2 lead.
Grit. Resilience. Dominance.
The team never let up on scoring or slowed the pace. If anything, the Flyers looked fueled for all 60 minutes.
The Devils, who have been dealing with injuries, looked beat up. The team was unable to connect on several opportunities.
Dan Vladar deserves credit as well. The goaltender defended the Philly net. [attempted bad play on words].
The grit came from the chirpiness. Both teams came out hot and ready to take down their closest opponent. The Flyers showed some aggression without putting the score at risk, what a concept.
There was a concerning moment where Travis Sanheim went into the boards head-first. The defender was okay and recovered. Almost immediately after going down, Devils captain Nico Hischier scored the second goal of the night. The missed call on Sanheim resulted in a goal, but the Flyers were playing smart—something the team hasn’t done in forever.
The Devils tried to crawl their way back into the game, pulling Jake Allen with just over six minutes to go. The attempt was successful, but the Flyers quickly responded when Trevor Zegras scored on a breakaway.
Following the game, Sean Couturier spoke with the media about his performance.
"I think we were opportunistic on our chances early on, and kind of played off of it, I would say, the rest of the game," said Couturier. "It's good for the confidence to get a couple of goals like that, and it's something to build on."
The biggest critique on the Flyers this season is that they have been unable to get pucks in the net early, have had to play too much comeback hockey, and haven’t had as many offensive opportunities. Well, they basically proved all of that wrong Thursday night.
A dominant performance last night proved that this team isn’t rebuilding; they are ready to compete with the top teams.
